BRISTOL STREET TREES

“Well done; the canopy point is important- partly because of the quantity of CO2 absorbed by a large tree of a small one, partly because of the quantity of invertebrates that a large canopy supports in mid summer- crucial to young bird survival, also of any small replacement; but finally that ALL big trees in appropriate locations should be managed as replacement veteran trees. NO tree over 300cm girth should be felled but managed where possible to become a 400cm tree, and in due course 500, and finally to join the very few 600cm giants that still exist in the city. Old , hollow, magnificent trees harbour both invertebrate species and fungal species, let alone lichens and epithytes that occur nowhere else. They also provide nest niches for birds such as Owls. They are as valuable as a Georgian building, or an ancient church and should have the same level of protection.
